While the rest of the world learned to navigate a pandemic, Matthew Raynor was still learning how to adjust to life in a wheelchair. In 2019, the Hampton Bays native suffered a severe spinal injury, the result of a dive gone wrong, that left him paralyzed below his collarbone.
For some, this would signify the end of all hope, but for Matt it was the chance to start over. Prior to his accident, Raynor was a fisherman with a photography hobby that captured powerful moments at sea—buoys, tempest-tossed boats, brewing weather and big waves—images both bold and beautiful. Since, it has transformed into art therapy, and a means to pay for his recovery.
